Hafid assessed that the social media platforms owned by these technology companies still provide space for online gambling perpetrators and developers to promote their illegal activities.
“I must mention that Meta, TikTok, X, and Instagram are included. We ask them also to take on a role in helping Indonesia combat online gambling, and I think it is mandatory,” Hafid affirmed here on Thursday.
She remarked that under President Prabowo Subianto, the new government had not communicated directly with the electronic system organizers (PSE) who manage social media platforms to discuss steps to eradicate online gambling.
However, Hafid affirmed that the PSE should already be aware of tightening supervision of platform use to prevent the spread of negative content, such as online gambling promotion content.
Hafid underscored the need for PSE to protect the security of its platform users in Indonesia, including securing them from exposure to content that has a negative impact, such as content related to gambling promotion.
“We appeal to them, who, of course, can also benefit from Indonesia’s wide market share and social media market share, to contribute. This is our common desire, not just the government, for the people also want this,” she remarked.
To eradicate online gambling, the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry has cut off access to 283,230 pieces of online gambling content from October 20 to November 13, 2024.
The blocking of access includes 261,881 pieces of content distributed via sites and IPs, 11,792 pieces of content on the Meta platform, 2,332 pieces of Google/YouTube content, 1,153 X accounts, 70 Telegram accounts, and 38 TikTok accounts.
