Well, the first weekend of the Olympics was certainly an interesting one, with the polarizing opening ceremony, the Canadian soccer drone scandal, and frustrating timing of ads on the NBC/Peacock broadcasts (missing an entire minute of a 14-minute rugby sevens game is unacceptable, folks).

I wanted to suggest Australia at plus money to win the women’s side of that event, as they were spectacular Sunday in the opening round robin games, but their final isn’t until Tuesday. So, instead we’ll go with some swimming, tennis and Danish soccer today.

I’d loved to have picked some more stuff from Paris, but that 5-hour time difference really kills some of you east coast folk, I get it.

Women’s 100m Breaststroke Final

This one goes off at about 3:25 p.m. eastern, with 2020 Olympic silver medalist Tatjana Smith (nee Schoenmaker) of South Africa the clear favorite. She was the fastest in the semis by quite a margin over my pick, Tang Qianting of China.

However, Tang is the two-time defending world champion in this event – including earlier this year in Qatar – and while her semifinal time wasn’t anything to write home about and she didn’t have Smith competing against her in Doha, if she goes as low as she’s capable, she should be able to give Smith a run for her money. As a result, I like her value here at plus money.

Qianting Tang to win (+400 at DraftKings)

Women’s Olympic Singles – Jessica Pegula vs. Elina Svitolina

American Jessica Pegula comes into this one ranked sixth in the world, 25 spots ahead of Svitolina. She has won four of the five meetings against the Ukrainian and is 3-1 on clay so far in 2024.

I like Pegula to take the victory here, but I expect the first set to be close as the opener has gone 10 games in four of their five all-time meetings.

Let’s be brave and go with the parlay for a little more risk/reward. As an FYI, this contest should get going some time after 3 p.m. ET I would imagine, but keep an eye on the game before it (Alcaraz vs. Griekspoor).

Pegula to win, first set to go over 9.5 games (+254 on DraftKings)

Denmark Superliga – Brondby vs Vejle, 1 p.m. ET

The top division in Denmark is only heading into its second week, but we have two teams who appear to be capable of scoring goals in bunches of late.

Brondby opened their Europa Conference league qualification campaign last week by putting six past Kosovan side KF Llapi, and scored three in their league opener on July 21 on the road at Viborg (they also gave up three). They also averaged two goals scored a game in last year’s regular season.

Veije, meanwhile, struggled to score last year as they finished second from bottom in the regular season, but survived the relegation playoffs. They seem to have got their offensive act together so far this year though, as they defeated Brondby 2-0 this preseason and scored a couple in a 3-2 opening round home loss to Randers.

I expect both of these teams to come out firing in this one and keep their hot scoring start going. If you’re brave, over 3.5 is +150, but I feel safer with the 2.5.

Over 2.5 goals (-170 on DraftKings)
