Soccer fans are running on the clouds as Euro 2024 gets under way in Germany and Copa America starts this week.

Going against the scoring grain at the Euros, I’m leaning towards an under in my soccer pick today, then I’ll go with a couple of heavy favorites in the WNBA and Major League Baseball.

EURO 2024 – ROMANIA VS. UKRAINE

Romania won its group in qualifying, going undefeated with six wins and four draws. But when you consider the toughest opponent in that group was Switzerland, there was some luck involved with this cakewalk to Germany.

They did manage to score 16 goals in their 10 qualifiers, but six of those came against lowly Andorra. Defensively, they were very good, only allowing five goals.

Ukraine had no luck whatsoever in the qualifying draw. They found themselves in a group with both 2020 finalists, England and Italy, losing out on an automatic qualifying spot on goal difference to the Azzurri before knocking off Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland to qualify for Germany via the playoffs.

This is a massive opening matchup in a Group E that could be pretty wide open with Belgium and Slovakia as the other two teams.

Romania will try to play their usual solid defensive game and catch Ukraine on the break, but the men in blue and yellow have too much talent to not find three points in this one.

DALLAS WINGS at MINNESOTA LYNX

The only WNBA matchup scheduled Monday is the struggling Dallas Wings taking on the high-flying Minnesota Lynx.

Dallas enters off seven straight defeats, with the most recent being a 17-point home shellacking at the hands of the one-loss Sun.

While the Wings do most things relatively well, especially rebounding and shooting from inside the arc – both 2s and FTs – they are the worst 3-point shooting team in the league at just 27.7 percent, and as a result have taken the second-fewest threes.

In the modern game you can’t struggle this much from downtown, and if you add in the fact that the Lynx are the best 3-point shooting team in the WNBA, this matchup just has disaster written all over it for Dallas.

Minnesota have only lost three games all season – two of those by one point each – and have looked dominant recently by knocking off Las Vegas by 14 points and the Storm by 19. Those two squads are right behind them in the standings, so no slouches by any means.

Loving the Lynx here to continue their hot run.

DETROIT TIGERS VS. ATLANTA BRAVES

We’ll wrap things up for this week with a third kind of round-ball game as we take a look at the Braves hosting the Detroit Tigers.

Atlanta won three of its last four, putting up an average of seven runs a game. They appear to have got over the funk that included struggling against the sorry Nationals last week and could continue their offensive success against the wildly inconsistent Tigers.

Detroit starter Reese Olson was having himself a tidy little season before giving up 12 runs on 22 hits over his most recent two starts. Perhaps the frustration of the minimal run support he’s been receiving finally boiled over, but this feels like just a bad time for him to be facing the Braves with as many runs as they’ve been putting up of late.

Braves hurler Max Fried saw his three-game win streak end last time out with a loss to the high-flying Orioles, but he should be able to get another streak going here in this series opener.
