NFL Playoff Stats And Notes
Home underdogs had a historically bad season in 2024. But Wild Card home underdogs (or pick ’em) are 15-4 ATS in the last 19 situations with both the Buccaneers and Texans winning big last season. The Texans and Rams are both home underdogs of less than a field goal this year.
Denver is one of just four new teams in this year’s playoffs. But the Broncos went just 2-5 vs. playoff opponents and beat the Chiefs with mostly backups in Week 18. Denver’s .340 strength of victory into Week 18 ranked last among all 14 playoff teams. The Bills went just 2-3 vs. playoff opponents, but those two wins were against No. 1 seeds Chiefs and Lions. Buffalo is 8-0 at home this season, but the Bills have won just one divisional round playoff game over the last five years as 5-time AFC East champions.
The Ravens are just 2-4 in the playoffs with 2-time MVP Lamar Jackson as quarterback, and he has 6 TD passes and 6 INT’s in the playoffs without reaching a Super Bowl. Jackson and Josh Allen of the Bills are having spectacular seasons as MVP favorites, and the Ravens (30.5) and Bills (30.9) join the Lions (33.2) as the only teams that averaged more than 30 points per game this season. The Ravens offense also led the NFL averaging 425 yards per game and 187 rushing yards per game. Baltimore played a stronger schedule while going 7-3 against playoff teams, and the Ravens .520 strength of victory is by far the highest in the 14-team playoff field. The slumping Steelers enter the playoffs on a 4-game losing streak, and are the biggest underdog in the wild card round.
The Texans were 1-5 vs. playoff teams this season, and the 54 sacks allowed of QB C.J. Stroud were the most of this year’s playoff teams. The Chargers allowed the fewest points in the league this season (17.7 ppg), and they are a legitimate threat to advance and beat the Chiefs. Los Angeles’ elite quarterback Justin Herbert did not make the Pro Bowl, but would have been a top choice in the NFC.
The Eagles and Packers played in Brazil in Week 1 with Philadelphia winning 34-29 in an even yardage game. Green Bay finished 2-5 against playoff teams this season while the Eagles were 5-2. Philadelphia’s defense allowed a league-low 278 yards per game and 17.8 points per game. A top offensive line paved the way for a 2,000 rushing season by star RB Saquon Barkley with WR’s A.J. Brown and DaVonte Smith combing for 135 receptions and nearly 2,000 yards. The Eagles and Vikings were an NFC-best 8-1 at home this season. Green Bay and first-time playoff starting QB Jordan Love went on the road last year and won at heavily-favored Dallas, who was undefeated at home.
The Buccaneers won six of their final seven games to win the NFC South. Tampa Bay was 4-3 against playoff teams including a Week 1 win over the Commanders, 37-20. Bucs QB Baker Mayfield’s 4,279 passing yards was No. 2 in the NFC. Jayden Daniels and the Commanders were the surprise story of the season under new Washington coach Dan Quinn. A 12-win season equalled their previous two seasons combined, and was the first winning season for Washington since 2015. Daniels made the Pro Bowl and will be Rookie of the Year while trying to win the franchise’s first playoff game in 19 years.
The Vikings Week 18 loss at Detroit cost then the NFC North division title and No. 1 seed. Their only loss on the road until Week 18 was to the Rams, 30-20 in Week 8. A Monday Night Football rematch in Los Angeles has third-year Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell against the Rams and coach Sean McVay, who he worked with as offensive coordinator when the Rams won the Super Bowl in 2022. The Vikings won 10-straight games before losing in Week 18, and the Rams recovered from a 1-4 start to win 9-of-11 games before resting starters including QB Matthew Stafford in a Week 18 loss. Vikings Pro Bowl QB Sam Darnold plays in his first playoff game coming off his worst and most erratic performance of the season at Detroit.

Last year the Super Bowl was in Las Vegas and the Chiefs beat the 49ers in overtime, 25-22. I featured some of the biggest and best sportsbooks in Las Vegas, and Nevada sportsbooks received more than $185 million in wagers on Super Bowl LVIII. That was a record handle, smashing the previous year’s Super Bowl wagering in the state by $32 million.
Leading U.S. sportsbooks are expected to break records again this year, and the American Gaming Association will provide estimates for Super Bowl betting nationwide a week before the Big Game in New Orleans.
The SuperBook in Las Vegas has an early Super Bowl line of AFC vs. NFC as Pick ‘em and a total of 52.5. The smorgasbord of prop bet offerings, player props and additional betting opportunities on Super Bowl LIX will be more popular driving fan engagement and entertainment while offering more ways to win.
