North Carolina had its second-best month for sports betting handle since launch, with state bettors wagering a near-record $657.7 million in November, according to the latest report from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission. The figure is second only to March’s $693.3 million, the month when sports betting went live in the state.
Of November’s total, bettors laid down $638.7 million, with the remaining $19 million accounting for promotional play. While the overall figure is down from the aforementioned March record, it must be noted that in that month bettors wagered $456.7 million in real-money bets and $202.6 million in promotional play.
With promotional play now making up a smaller share of the wagering mix, operators in the Tar Heel state posted record gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $78.1 million in November. The figure eclipsed the previous all-time high of $70.1 million in September.
Year-to-date, bettors have wagered $4.4 billion with an additional $434.3 million in promotional play through the first nine months of 2024. Promotions now account for less than $40 million per month since June, a far cry from March’s $202.6 million.
Operators paid the state $14.1 million in taxes for the month, based on an 18% tax on GGR. There are currently right sports wagering platforms live in North Carolina. The state regulator does not break down revenue by operator or sport.
The state’s betting market has performed well during its first year of operations thus far. Since football season began in earnest in September, the state has wagered at least $575 million each month. As a result, the state has collected $98.6 million since March’s launch.
