Nottingham City Council has been ranked as one the highest performing local authorities in the Local Authority Active Travel England Capability Ratings 2024 which reviews active travel infrastructure and support.
Active Travel England (ATE) – the government’s executive agency tasked with making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyday trips – has this week published its updated active travel capability ratings for local authorities.
Scored on a Capability Rating (CR) from zero to four, Nottingham scored a CR of 3 – maintaining the same rating as the year prior.
The ratings are delineated as follows:
- Level 0: Little local leadership or support and limited record of delivery
- Level 1: Some local leadership and support with developing plans and isolated interventions
- Level 2: Visible local leadership and support, with emerging network
- Level 3: Strong local leadership and support, substantial network in place with increasing modal share
- Level 4: Dense network in place with a high proportion of trips made by walking, wheeling and cycling. Very supportive leadership and policies to further improve transport choice
Nottingham is just one of six local authorities to achieve a 3 rating, the surrounding administrative region of Nottinghamshire decreasing from two to one.
The self-assessment process ran from October to December 2023. After authorities completed a self-assessment, responses were put through a moderation exercise to examine the ratings and supporting evidence supplied by authorities.
This considered the evidence provided by local authorities against performance information held by ATE.
All 80 local authorities outside London took part in the process, the capability ratings used to calculate
funding allocations for local authorities for 2024/25.
According to Active Travel England’s ratings, Nottingham City Council Nottingham demonstrated ‘very strong local leadership, comprehensive plans, and a significant network in place with a growing number of people choosing to walk, wheel and cycle.’
Achievements and innovations in active travel will be celebrated at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which will be held on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
