OJK Blocks 10,000 Accounts Detected Playing Online Gambling

JAKARTA – The Financial Services Authority (OJK) claims to have blocked 10,000 bank accounts used for online gambling activities, thanks to assistance from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.

Chairman of the OJK Board of Commissioners, Mahendra Siregar, said that the data was obtained based on information from Komdigi, which they then followed up on.

“We also appreciate the cooperation that has been carried out in an effort to create a digital financial ecosystem that is safe, stable, reliable for all Indonesian people, including blocking 10,000 bank accounts affiliated with online gambling,” said Minister of Communication and Trade Meutya Hafid on Thursday, November 14.

Mahendra explained that after the blocking, OJK collaborated with related banks to explore the illegal transaction activities.

According to Mahendra, the bank was asked to conduct a comprehensive assessment regarding the accounts used for online gambling transactions as well as other accounts from the same owner.

“So that in the end the number of accounts blocked is more than the original 10 thousand. So that is the initial number in its development,” added Mahendra.

Based on VOI records, as of early November 2024, OJK has blocked at least 8,000 accounts indicated to be related to online gambling. This number increased from 6,000 accounts in August 2024.
