TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian National Police identified 85 content creators or social media influencers suspected of promoting online gambling. Chief of the Police’s General Crime Directorate Commissioner General Wahyu Widada confirmed that these influencers are being investigated for allegedly endorsing online gambling sites on social media.
According to Wahyu, the police have started taking action against them since the establishment of the Online Gambling Eradication Task Force on November 5, 2024.
“Since the establishment of this task force, we have taken action against 85 influencers involved in online gambling promotion,” he said at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Office, Central Jakarta on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Wahyu explained that the police have designated these individuals as suspects based on evidence and witness testimonies, with the assistance of ITE and criminal experts.
He also mentioned that some of these cases are not recent. Several influencers have been involved in promoting online gambling in the past, even though the specific websites they endorsed may no longer be active. The police are working with experts to assess the evidence and determine if these individuals can still be charged.
However, Wahyu declined to disclose the names of the suspected influencers, stating that the investigation remains ongoing.
