Portugal vs France preview
Portugal and France face off in Hamburg for a chance to play the winner of Spain vs Germany in next week’s semi-final.
Initially, this match promised excitement between two pre-tournament favourites, but the reality has been less thrilling…
France have disappointed, scoring only three goals in the tournament – two own goals and a penalty by Kylian Mbappe. Their wastefulness is evident, with just 16 of 69 attempts on target (23%) and an xG of 0.09 per shot.
Portugal, despite their attacking talent, have also struggled.
They failed to score in their last two matches against Slovenia and Georgia. Roberto Martinez’s team needed penalties to overcome a stubborn Slovenia, ranked 51 places below them by FIFA.
Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, poses another dilemma.
The legendary forward has yet to score at Euro 2024, despite taking more shots than any other player. This inefficiency won’t help against a French team that has kept three clean sheets in four games, conceding only a re-taken penalty from Robert Lewandowski.

At the double
This could finally be the day that Kylian Mbappe ignites at the European Championships.
The Real Madrid striker, 25, has 12 World Cup goals, but his penalty against Poland is his only goal in eight appearances at the Euros.
That could change on Friday.
France will be happy enough to concede possession to Portugal and hit them on the counter, and there’s few better or equipped with more pace than Marcus Thuram and Kylian Mbappe to capitalise.

Desperate
Cristiano Ronaldo is absolutely desperate to get on the scoresheet at another European Championships.
That was pretty evident from his last display against Slovenia, where he took a shot from every free-kick regardless of the angle or distance.
