PSG vs Brest predictions

As is customary at this stage of the season, Paris Saint-Germain currently have one eye on the start of the Champions League.

Luis Enrique’s team will kick-start their continental campaign on Wednesday when Girona make the trip to Paris.

The French champions would have hoped for a kinder draw in the league phase of the competition, which has undergone a revamp this season.

As well as Girona, PSG will do battle with Arsenal, PSV, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Red Bull Salzburg, Stuttgart and Manchester City over eight matchdays between now and the end of January. That is a really tricky set of fixtures for Luis Enrique’s team to negotiate.

Of course, PSG should not take their eye off the domestic ball as they prepare to begin their latest quest to win the club’s first ever Champions League.

In truth, though, PSG are good enough to win most Ligue 1 matches even when some of their focus is diverted elsewhere.

The likes of Marseille and Monaco could potentially keep them honest in the Ligue 1 title race, but the bookies have PSG down as strong favourites to finish at the summit of the standings for good reason.

The club from the capital have made a strong start to the campaign, beating Le Havre 4-1, Montpellier 6-0 and Lille 3-1.

That last triumph may have been by the slenderest margin so far, but it was perhaps the most impressive result to date.

Lens are a good side – they finished fourth last term and won their first two games of 2024/25 – but PSG were too strong in their meeting immediately prior to the international break.

Luis Enrique’s team now turn their attention to Brest, who punched above their weight by finishing third in Ligue 1 last time out.

However, Eric Roy’s charges have had a tough start to the current campaign, losing 5-1 to Marseille and 2-0 to Lens before a 4-0 victory over Saint-Etienne in gameweek three.

PSG vs Brest betting tips

Brest are likely to be soundly beaten by Paris Saint-Germain as Ligue 1 returns after the international break.

PSG -1.5 Asian handicap – 10/11 (SBK)

Brest are also preparing for matchday one of the Champions League, when they will face Sturm Graz, after qualifying for Europe’s premier competition for the first time ever.

It will be interesting to see how well they are able to balance domestic and continental commitments over the coming months. It could be a struggle, and despite keeping hold of Roy over the summer, Brest are likely to take a few backwards steps in Ligue 1 this term.

PSG have been dominant so far this season, winning each of their matches to date by two clear goals or more.

We predict a similarly comfortable victory here. When they are on it, PSG are very difficult to face at the Parc des Princes.

The champions are in fine form and they should ultimately have too much quality for Brest this weekend.

Tip PSG with a -1.5 Asian handicap at 10/11 with SBK

PSG to win both halves – 15/8 (SBK)

Brest gave as good as they got against PSG last season. They drew 2-2 at the Parc des Princes in the first meeting between the duo, before losing 3-2 at home after Kylian Mbappe scored the winning goal late on.

This time, though, we anticipate PSG controlling more of the encounter. Despite his undoubted brilliance, Mbappe’s exit has (so far at least) made Luis Enrique’s team more coherent and balanced.

Everything had to go through Mbappe last season, whereas there is now more fluidity to the PSG side when they go forward.

Winning both halves is not easy, but PSG managed it against both Le Havre and Montpellier.

It can be hard to find value when backing PSG to win in Ligue 1, but this wager is definitely worth taking up at the above price.

Marco Asensio to score any time – 7/5 (SBK)

It will be interesting to see if Luis Enrique rests any of his regular starters on Saturday with a view to keeping them fresh against Girona.

Because we have just come off an international break and it is still early in the campaign, the likelihood is that the PSG manager will name his strongest possible XI for the visit of Brest.

That probably means we will again see a front three of Ousmane Dembele, Marco Asensio and Bradley Barcola, the trio that lined up from the start against both Montpellier and Lille.

Asensio has excelled in a false nine up to now. That role sees him drop deep and move into withdrawn positions, inviting Barcola and Dembele to fill the space he vacates.

But Asensio is still a goal threat himself and this could be the game in which he scores his second goal of the season.
