Republic of Ireland vs England predictions

It was another summer of heartache for England. For the second European Championship in a row, the Three Lions reached the final. But that is where their run came to an end.

The scoreline was close, as Spain ran out 2-1 winners in Berlin, but in truth England were second best from start to finish.

On the balance of the tournament as a whole, it would have been unjust for the Three Lions to lift the trophy ahead of an excellent Spain side. England barely put together a good 90-minute performance all summer. They underwhelmed in the group stage, before scraping past Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands in the knockouts.

Even so, it was a cruel way for Gareth Southgate to bow out of the job. The long-serving manager announced his decision to step down a few days after the final, having been at the helm for eight years.

Expectations were low back in 2016, but Southgate exceeded them – and then some. A World Cup semi-final and two European Championship finals were more than anyone could have anticipated back then.

However, England ultimately failed to win a trophy with an immensely talented crop of players and some relatively favourable draws along the way.

Attention now turns to the future. England will be aiming to go all the way at World Cup 2026, but before that they must decide who will lead them there. Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and, more ambitiously, Pep Guardiola are among the contenders according to the bookies.

For now, Lee Carsley has been handed the reins on an interim basis. He will likely be in charge for the entirety of the Nations League campaign, which runs until November. Of course, if the FA start to run out of options, the former Under-21 boss could play himself into contention.

The problem for Carsley is that he will not be facing elite opposition following England’s relegation to League B of the Nations League. Finishing top of a group that contains the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece would not necessarily set pulses racing. England’s absence from League A also means they cannot win the trophy.

England will be looking to begin the post-Gareth Southgate era with a win against the Republic of Ireland.

Draw/England half-time/full-time – 3/1 (Betfred)

The Republic of Ireland are also under new management going into this international break. After a long wait to choose a successor to Stephen Kenny, Heimir Hallgrimsson was unveiled in July.

Hallgrimsson was one of the joint-coaches of his native Iceland when the tiny nation reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, beating England along the way.

He has inherited a difficult situation as Ireland manager after years of decline, and in this fixture at least Hallgrimsson will set up his team to avoid defeat first and foremost.

It will be difficult to hold England at bay for the entirety of this contest given the players at Carsley’s disposal.

But England were not particularly fast starters at Euro 2024, so Ireland may well be able to stick with them until half-time.

England to win to nil – 23/20 (Betfred)

Ireland used both a back three and a back four under the aforementioned Kenny, and it will be interesting to see which system Hallgrimsson opts for in this one.

The bigger issue for Ireland is at the other end of the field. Creativity has been sorely lacking for a while now, while Evan Ferguson, the great hope up front, has not played much for Brighton & Hove Albion over the last 12 months.

There is hope that Sammie Szmodics, who was prolific for Blackburn Rovers last season, could make an impact, but all things considered England are likely to keep a clean sheet on Saturday.

Defensive solidity was one of their strengths under Southgate and that should remain the case under Carsley.

Marc Guehi and John Stones have now struck up a relationship at centre-back, while Harry Maguire is back in the squad after injury.

Harry Kane to score any time – 21/20 (Betfred)

Harry Kane is in line to make his 100th appearance for England against Finland next week. For now, though, he will be fully focused on the Ireland game.

Kane was some way short of his own high standards at the European Championship, but that was chiefly because he was not fully fit.

Now that the Bayern Munich frontman has recovered his sharpness and shaken off a back issue, there is no question of him being left out of the team to face Ireland.

Kane is a hugely reliable scorer for club and country, and we like his chances of notching a record-extending 67th goal for England in this game.
