The Netherlands put on a confusing display in the group stage. They controlled the proceedings against Poland, and emerged with a 2-1 comeback victory while retaining 65% of possession. Romania had a horrendous run in the pre-tournament friendlies, drawing 0-0 at home as heavy favorites against both Liechtenstein and Bulgaria. But in competitive fixtures, the Tricolorii have been nothing short of exceptional over the last 18 months.

I haven’t been impressed with the Netherlands so far. The talent is obvious at times, and Van Dijk and De Vrij represent arguably the most intimidating center back combination in the tournament, if not the world. But the midfield play has left a lot to be desired, and it’s an area where coach Ronald Koeman doesn’t have his full complement of players.
Romania wasn’t overwhelmed by a very good Swiss team in qualifying, and won’t be overmatched against the Dutch on Tuesday.
