Things certainly took a bad turn for the Indiana Pacers – and on Indy 500 weekend, no less. The status of Tyrese Haliburton might portend a serious engine problem.
If you’re from a certain North American continent – or have an affinity for its hockey teams – you’ll want to monitor Saturday’s NHL Western Conference final Game 2 as the Dallas Stars host the Edmonton Oilers.
It’s Memorial Day weekend, too, so you know we’ll hit the bricks at Indy.
Boston Celtics at Indiana Pacers
This was supposed to be a celebration for the overachieving Pacers, who put together a surprising regular season that easily exceeded their preseason win total, knocked out two Eastern Conference foes and battled Boston into overtime during Game 1 of this conference finals.
We don’t want to overstate one player’s influence on a game, but the Pacers during the postseason are +59 when Haliburton is on the court. They are -35 when he is not.
Mildly good news came Saturday when Haliburton was listed as “GTD” (game-time decision) on the NBA’s midday injury report.
Either way, the defense will suffer. If the defensively challenged Haliburton can’t go, the defensively challenged TJ McConnell will play bigger minutes and the Celtics will rack up the points.
For Boston, Jrue Holiday caught fire in Games 1 and 2 but now might have caught something else. He’s also a GTD with “illness” for Saturday’s Game 3.
The versatile Holiday is 16-23 from the field in this series, averaging 21.5 points per game.
But the Celtics smell blood in the water – and maybe Jayson Tatum won’t continue to believe he has ability from 3-point range. He’s 21-for-79 during the playoffs (26.6 percent).
Tatum is still the dominant player in this series, averaging 26.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game, and, adding to Indiana’s concerns, Jaylen Brown is probably still miffed about not being named to any of the All-NBA teams.
Brown’s 40-point, Game 2 output reflected the fresh wound of that snub. He’s not likely to forgive anytime soon.
Keep a close eye on Haliburton, and look for Myles Turner to rebound from a rough outing in Game 2.
Celtics team total OVER 113.5 at -135 (DraftKings)
Myles Turner same-game parlay at-140 (DraftKings): 15+ points and 5+ rebounds.
Edmonton Oilers at Dallas Stars
Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner held up well in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals series in Dallas, with the Stars producing 33 shots on goal.
Edmonton and its elite attackers were even better, peppering Dallas’ Jake Oettinger to the tune of 38 shots and escaping with a 3-2 overtime victory.
The Stars will try to bounce back at home with a tighter defensive game plan, but the Oilers are likely to sustain their pressure.
Oettinger will have to be better.
Three-leg same-game parlay a -110 (DraftKings): Dallas OVER 1.5 goals, Oilers OVER 1.5 goals and Oilers +1.5 on the puck line.
Indianapolis 500 (Sunday)
With the excitement over NASCAR star Kyle Larson pushing himself into the field, several drivers are taking the, uh, back seat.
We are backing the one with the best name in the field – but also because he’s due in victory lane at Inday.
It’s Will Power, who last won in 2018 and has the second-fastest qualifying time for Sunday’s race.
Now 43, he’s backed by a strong Team Penske operation and will be formidable all day.
Will Power top-five finish at -130 (DraftKings).
