England head into Euro 2024 as the pre-tournament favourites, but have only won one of their last five matches in all competitions ahead of their tournament opener with Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night.
Gareth Southgate’s men topped a potentially tricky group in qualifying containing European champions Italy and Ukraine, and doing enough to bag themselves a top seeded draw in this summer’s championships in Germany, winning six of their eight games and going unbeaten.
Since securing qualification though, England have failed to beat North Macedonia, Brazil and Belgium, then beating Bosnia in Newcastle at the start of last week and signed off their final match before the Euros with a 1-0 home defeat to Iceland, who themselves failed to qualify for the Euros.
The Three Lions will be hoping for an impressive start to their tournament on Sunday night, ultimately aiming to go one better than they managed three years ago, when Italy beat them on penalties in the final at Wembley.
Following Sunday’s match, England will then take on Denmark in Cologne on Thursday evening before finish their group stage in Frankfurt with a match against Slovenia the following Tuesday night.
Standing in England’s way of three points on Sunday are a Serbia side who have struggled with consistency in recent years, but managed to secure qualification to their first ever Euros as an independent nation with four wins from their eight qualifying matches.
A second-placed finish behind Hungary saw them placed into pot 4 for the seeding, though Dragan Stojkovic’s side have won only two of their last six matches ahead of their trip to Gelsenkirchen this weekend.
The Eagles kicked off 2024 with a 4-0 defeat away against Russia in March before getting back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Cyprus in Larnaca.
The Balkan nation’s Euro 2024 warm up friendlies produced similar results, falling to a 2-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna before signing off with 3-0 win away at Sweden to boost confidence ahead of Sunday’s tournament opener.
Both Serbia’s second and third Group C matches this summer will take place in Munich, starting with a game against Slovenia in their second match before closing out the group stage against Denmark at the same venue.
Sunday night’s match will be the first team the two nations have ever met since Serbia’s independence was restored in 2006.
