Southampton vs Brentford predictions
Matchweek 20 in the Premier League throws up an intriguing encounter at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton sit bottom of the table on just six points from 19 matches. Their only win this season came against Everton (1-0) on November 2nd.
But their opponents on Saturday are Brentford, who despite sitting 12th in the Premier League on 24 points, have a worse away record than the Saints have at home.
The Bees have picked up just two points on the road this season. So with their visitors showing such poor away form, Southampton will believe this matchup represents a great chance to pick up that elusive second win.
The Saints come into the match off the back of three improved performances under new manager Ivan Juric.
The former Roma boss took over from the sacked Russell Martin after the 5-0 home thrashing from Tottenham Hotspur.
Since taking over, the Croatian has tightened the team up at the back, with Southampton only conceding three times in Juric’s three matches in charge.
The run started with a 0-0 draw away at Fulham and was followed by a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on Boxing Day.
A 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace on Sunday is Southampton’s most recent result. Tyler Dibling gave the Saints the lead after 15 minutes. But goals from Trevor Chalobah and Eberechi Eze condemned Juric’s team to their 15th defeat of the season.
Despite the improved performances under Juric, the Saints still look nailed on for the drop. They are rock bottom and ten points from safety.
As a result, the bookmakers have Southampton at 1/4 to finish bottom and 1/33 to be relegated.
A quick glance at the Premier League table may have you believe that Brentford are doing okay.
They sit 12th and are nine points clear of the drop. But there are some worrying trends starting to develop for Thomas Frank’s team.
First of all, they have been poor on the road. A paltry six goals in nine games away from the Gtech has resulted in just two draws and seven defeats for Frank’s team. That is relegation away form.
Furthermore, the Bees are on a winless run of four in the Premier League, and have lost four of their last five in all competitions.
The last time Brentford tasted victory was in their 4-2 home win over Newcastle on December 7th.
Since then they have lost 2-1 at Chelsea, 3-1 at Newcastle (in the Carabao Cup) and 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest.
The Bees did stop the run of defeats with a post-Christmas 0-0 draw away at Brighton. The respite was short lived as they lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal on New Year’s Day.
A match against Southampton could prove to be the ideal tonic to end that winless run. But if it goes wrong, Thomas Frank’s team will find themselves under increasing pressure.
Southampton vs Brentford betting tips
The worst home record takes on the second worst away record in the Premier League.
Southampton have picked up just four points from nine matches at St Mary’s in the Premier League this season. Brentford have picked up just two points from nine matches on the road.
All three outcomes look possible in the match betting market. We are going for a draw. Read on for our alternative Southampton v Brentford betting tips:
Draw and both teams to score
Only the Saints have a worse away record than the Bees. So this will give Brentford added incentive to get a result of some sort and improve their record on the road.
But Southampton also have an incentive to do well. New manager Ivan Juric has already overseen an improvement in his team.

And he will be keen to build on that against a team who have only managed the same amount of points on the road as his Southampton team has.
The chances are both teams could cancel each other out.

Bryan Mbeumo to score or assist
Bryan Mbeuno has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season.
The 25-year-old has 11 goals and two assists for the Bees. And it’s thanks to his improved statistics that Brentford have barely missed their former talisman Ivan Toney.
Mbeumo scored his most recent goal in the Bees’ 3-1 home defeat to Arsenal on New Year’s Day. It was his first goal in three matches, and it has to be said it was a well taken goal.
It is true that only two of Mbeumo’s goals have come on the road (one third of Brentford’s away goals). But it is also true that he has gone on three and two-match scoring streaks in the Premier League earlier this season.
In a Brentford team that struggles on the road, Mbeumo looks their most likely source of a goal involvement against a Saints team that has conceded 22 goals in nine matches at home.
⚽ Bryan Mbeumo to score or assist at 13/10 with Casumo ⚽
Tyler Dibling over 1.5 shots
Southampton’s Tyler Dibling has been making a name for himself in the Premier League this season.
The 18-year-old has scored twice in his 18 appearances for the Saints, with his most recent goal coming in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday.
The youngster was dropped to the bench for the Boxing Day defeat to West Ham. Saints’ boss Ivan Juric cited fitness concerns as the reason.
But even from the bench, Dibling managed one shot on goal in the 17 minutes he played.
Recalled to the starting XI for the Palace match, Dibling had two shots on goal, rewarding his manager with the opening goal of the match.
It’s hard to see Dibling not starting against Brentford. If he does, expect him to be a threat with a recent goal under his belt.
