Southampton vs Liverpool predictions

Bottom of the table Southampton will face top of the table Liverpool when the Premier League resumes this weekend.

The struggling Saints sit bottom with four points from 11 matches. Their only win came courtesy of a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Everton on matchday 9. The Saints couldn’t back that victory up the following week, going down 2-0 away to Wolves in another early season six-pointer.

Southampton boss Russell Martin has found himself under pressure in recent weeks. Martin led the Saints back to the Premier League via the playoffs, but such has been the poor start to the new season, Martin finds himself as the 2/1 second favourite in the latest sack race betting (Lopetegui is the current market leader at 7/4).

The Saints decided not to pull the trigger on Martin in the international break. But with the January transfer window fast approaching, every defeat could be his last at the club.

As for Liverpool, it’s simple, more of the same please.

New boss Arne Slot couldn’t have wished for a better start. Liverpool sit top of the league with 28 points from 11 matches. As well as nine wins, Liverpool has a goal difference of +15, with 21 for and just a miserly six against.

Liverpool has been scoring at the same rate as their top of the table rivals. But the difference is they have conceded far fewer. Slot has already masterminded a way to tighten up the backline without diluting the team’s attacking threat.

Furthermore, Liverpool’s rivals have been dropping points. Manchester City sit second, but they have lost their last two in the league and are five points behind the Reds.

Chelsea are third, and they are on 19 points, the same as Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton, all are nine behind Liverpool. Of those four teams, only Arsenal is expected to challenge for the title, and they haven’t won any of their last four.

The Gunners have been on a difficult run and will no doubt start to pick up points again. But Liverpool has also had a challenging run of games that has seen them beat Chelsea 2-1 at home, draw 2-2 away at Arsenal, and beat Brighton (2-1) and Villa (2-0) at Anfield.

The Reds will have tougher challenges ahead, a home fixture against Manchester City follows, along with an away trip to Newcastle and then the Merseyside Derby (not forgetting Real Madrid in the Champions League). But after the start they have had, the Reds can approach their tricky run of fixtures full of confidence.

In team news, Liverpool is still without the injured Alisson in goal, and Diogo Jota is also still missing. Joining them on the injury list is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who came off injured in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Virgil van Dijk did leave the Netherlands’ camp early for what was described as medical reasons. But Slot has announced he is set to play.

For Southampton, it never rains, it just pours. Already without long term absentees Gavin Bazunu, Ross Stewart and William Smallbone, Russell Martin will now also have to make do without Aaron Ramsdale and Jan Bednarek for the foreseeable future.

All teams have to deal with injuries across a season. But for the Saints, losing two more key players at this stage of the campaign is a real sickener.

Southampton vs Liverpool betting tips

The match after an international break can often be a good time to catch one of the top teams out.

Former Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp was an outspoken critic of the fixture calendar, often bemoaning Liverpool playing on the Saturday lunch time after an international break or a midweek European trip.

Maybe new boss Arne Slot is the beneficiary of Klopp’s complaints, as Liverpool have a Sunday kickoff against the Saints. And that would just be Russell Martin’s luck.

Not many Saints fans would give their team a chance against this Liverpool team, and we would have to agree. We can only see another three points for the league leaders.

Finding good value betting tips in this match isn’t easy, as the odds are all built around a comfortable win for Liverpool. So unless you think the Saints can pull off a shock result (Saints/Draw is 53/20 in the double chance market), you may find our betting tips below a little Liverpool-win heavy:

Liverpool -1 to win on the handicap

Liverpool is 28/100 to win in the 90 minutes market. They are 7/10 to win from -1 and 7/4 to win from -2.

Backing Liverpool from -2 is tempting, especially at odds of 7/4. For that, we would need the Reds to win by three clear goals. Even in current form, that is a big ask of Slot’s team.

Instead, we are going to back Liverpool to win from -1. We can see the Reds winning by two clear goals.

Back Liverpool to win from -1 at 7/10 with 10bet

Mohamed Salah to outscore Southampton

Mohamed Salah has been in great form for his club in recent weeks. The Egyptian is looking close to the form he showed for Liverpool in the 2017/18 season when he scored 32 goals in 36 Premier League matches.

Already this season Salah has eight goals and six assists in 11 matches.

To score anytime, Salah is 3/4. To score more goals than a Southampton team that doesn’t score many, Salah is 37/20.

Back Mo Salah to score more goals than Southampton at 37/20 with 10bet

Liverpool to win to nil

On the road this season, Liverpool has won away from home without conceding against Ipswich, Crystal Palace and Manchester United in the Premier League, and RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

The Saints have failed to score at home in their defeats to Nottingham Forest (1-0) and Manchester United (3-0).

Furthermore, the Saints have failed to score in five of their eleven Premier League matches this season.

Russell Martin does like to play a possession based game. But it’s hard to see that working against an in-form Liverpool team, and we can see the home team coming off second best in the possession stats.

As a result, Liverpool should restrict Southampton’s chances. And with the Saints only having scored seven goals in the Premier League this season, it’s worth backing Liverpool to win to nil.

Back Liverpool to win to nil at 5/4 with 10bet
