Spain Fines Illegal Gambling Sites €65 Million in First Half of 2024

Spain’s Ministry for Consumer Affairs has revealed that it issued €65,325,000 in fines to online gambling operators during the first half of 2024.

The fines were issued to 15 gambling operators, 13 of which were penalised for operating in the Spanish market without a license. The total fines for illegal gambling came to €65 million while locally-licensed operators paid €325,000 in fines.

All companies listed above were fined €5 million each and banned from applying for licensing or operating in Spain for a period of two years.

Local Gambling Operators Fined

Two locally licensed operators, Codere and Electraworks, were also fined for what the gambling regulator considered serious breaches.

Codere Online was fined by gambling regulator the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) for a Facebook ad it believed appealed to minors. the company was fined €162,500.

Electraworks was fined €225,000 for missed deadlines in relation to technical requirement reports. In a letter to the operator dated March 21, the regulator stated that the reports had been repeatedly submitted late throughout 2023, accumulating a total delay of 1,611 days over the year.

The announcement also revealed that total fines issued in the industry since 2021 now stands at €398 million.

Gambling industry fines in 2024 so far have now reached €98.5 million.
