The UEFA Champions League rolls back into town this week and there’s a tasty showdown in Portugal as Ruben Amorim’s Sporting Lisbon host Manchester City.
With the ink now dry on Amorim’s contract at Man United, Red Devils fans will be backing him to win some early brownie points with a positive result against Pep Guardiola, ahead of his flight to Manchester.
Our tipster Feargal Brennan looks at the markets to see where the value lies in Sporting Lisbon v Man City betting. Here’s our three best bets!

Whisper it quietly, but this could be a ‘good time’ to face City, as Pep Guardiola’s team head to Lisbon on the back of successive defeats.
Tottenham knocked his side out of the EFL Cup last week, and their Premier League unbeaten run was stopped at 42 games over the weekend, as Bournemouth stormed to a 2-1 win.
However, they have picked up seven points from three Champions League games so far in 2024/25 with no goals conceded, but that could be tested by a Sporting Lisbon side packed with goals.
Amorim’s team have not lost a game in league, cup and Champions League action this season, scoring in every game across an unbelievable 15-game run.
Viktor Gyokeres to score
In one of the most bizarre transfers of recent years, Sweden star Viktor Gyokeres swapped COVENTRY CITY for Sporting Lisbon, ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
However, that was just the start of the madness, as he smashed in a whopping 43 goals in 50 games in all competitions in his debut season in Portugal.
That sealed the league title for Amorim and the Golden Boot for Gyokeres. He is bang in form again this season, with 16 goals in 15 games, including four in the weekend win over Estrela.
Correct score: 1-1
Despite so much momentum behind Sporting Lisbon, and the chance for Amorim to secure a ‘derby win’ before setting foot in Manchester, it’s always tough to back against Pep.
The former Barcelona boss will be rallying his troops ahead of this game, and they have not lost a Champions League game inside 90 minutes since December 2021!
Sporting will always fancy their chances at home and this could be a superb test of Amorim’s Premier League credentials.
