talkSPORT betting tips – Best football bets and advice for Monday 1 July

The last-16 of the Euros continues on Monday, featuring arguably the tie of the round. After both France and Belgium failed to win their groups, the pair meet, having originally been expected to face each other in the quarter-finals in the opposite side of the draw.

The winner of that tie will meet either Portugal or Slovenia in the next round – with those two clashing in the second of Monday’s knockout ties.

Ahead of a busy day of action, let’s take a look at some of the standout bets across the two big games at Euro 2024.

Bet of the Day

Portugal to win to nil @ Evens

Portugal struggled against Georgia in their final group game, but Roberto Martinez was largely free to change the side as they’d already won their group. Georgia benefitted from defensive issues, but the returning cast should strengthen Portugal at the back.

Martinez should set his side up to hold off a Slovenia side who scored just twice in the group stage. The underlying numbers from the wins over the Czech Republic and Turkey were encouraging, ahead of tougher tests to come.

Slovenia won’t be that big a test for Portugal, despite beating them in a friendly earlier this year.

Martinez has tinkered almost too much with this side since taking charge 18 months ago, so expect a tactical change that leads the Portuguese to a routine win.

With Slovenia’s issues in attack considered, a win to nil appeals.

Special of the day

Kylian Mbappe 2+ shots on target and Kevin De Bruyne to make an assist @ 6/1

Kylian Mbappe hasn’t been able to get into a rhythm at the Euros so far, but he put in a strong display on his return to the side against Poland.

The incoming Real Madrid forward had five shots in that game, with four on target.

Mbappe became the first French player to score at the tournament and he can build on that fine display.

This Belgian side are no pushovers, but they were top seed in Group E and managed to concede 12 shots on target across their three games.

On the other hand, Belgium have a star attacker of their own in Kevin De Bruyne. The Man City midfielder turned scorer in their second game.

He’s yet to record an assist at the tournament, but he’s recorded 1.5 Expected Assists with his teammates fluffing their lines.

France have been conservative without being truly convincing defensively. De Bruyne should get an assist on the board before departing Germany, so 6/1 on Mbappe to have two shots on target alongside a De Bruyne assist appeals.

Longshot of the day

Bruno Fernandes to score two or more @ 12/1

Finally, as mentioned above, Martinez is expected to switch things up for their rematch with Slovenia.

In their March defeat, Portugal played a 3-4-3 system similar to their meetings with Georgia and the Czech Republic in the last round.

However, they switched to a 4-2-3-1 against Turkey in between those two fixtures. That change pushed Bruno Fernandes into a number 10 role, bringing his best display so far.

He scored in that game, taking four shots on goal, before being rested for their final group game, but he should return to the side playing just behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

Given that, 12/1 on two or more goals for Fernandes is the standout long shot of the day.
