The top 100 baby names in England and Wales have been revealed by the Office of National Statistics — and some surprising new entries have made the list.
Once again, Olivia claimed the girls top spot for the third year in a row, followed by Amelia, Isla, Lily and Freya.
For boys, Muhammad was the most popular, overtaking Noah. Oliver comes in at third place, and George in fourth.
But while these familiar favourites continue to rank highly — there are also some more unexpected additions to the list.
Neveah now ranks at 99. The moniker, which is ‘heaven’ spelt backwards, proves divisive among mums and dads.
On Reddit, it’s been branded ‘weird’ and ‘pretentious’, with one particularly harsh poster saying it’s ‘the lower back tattoo of names.’
And some have criticised parents for trying to be a little too original, with on poster saying: ‘I think they are trying to be unique or clever.’
A nurse seemed to back this claim up adding: ‘I have not once ever taken care of a Nevaeh whose mother did not say “it’s heaven backwards!” to me.’
But others have defended the name saying it was ‘pretty sounding’ and another claims to have ‘never understood’ why the name gets so much hate.
Elsewhere in the list, just squeezing in at 100, is another new addition, Raya, the lead character in Disney’s 2021 film, Raya and The Last Dragon.
The ONS points out that parents are influenced by popular culture, explaining why Margot and Cillian skyrocketed during Barbieheimer fever inJuly 2023 (the names are those of the lead actors in both movies).
But Raya is also the name of a popular dating app, famously used by celebrities. Perhaps parents are paying homage to the way they met?

Another new girls entry was Autumn at 96. The ONS explains t that seasonal names like this are the most popular at the relevant times of the year.
Autumn was favoured in September and October, and Summer in June and July. Christmas names including Joseph, Holly, and Robyn are most popular in December.
For boys, it seems that petrol head dads have been opting for Enzo (the first name of the car maker, Ferrari) as it entered the ranking at 95.
A more unusual boys name was Bodhi at 100, a Buddhist term which refers to a state of enlightenment.
Other new entries include Nellie (97) and Lilah (95) for girls, and Jax (87) for boys.

The data, released December 5, reveals the names parents in England and Wales were naming their children in 2023, using birth registration data.
It’ll be a while (likely this time next year) before we know what parents have been packing for their kids in 2024, but experts are already predicting trends for the year ahead.
According to Nameberry, in 2025 parents will be looking for an ‘easily understood, but not endemically popular’ name for their child, and are turning to the world around them, finding inspiration in coasts, forests, and even the Grand Canyon.
Opting for nature themed names, Nameberry predicts a rise in names including Acre, Creek, Cloud, Reef, Shore, Isle and perhaps most surprising, Branch.
