2024 UEFA European Championship preview: Slovenia vs. England odds, prediction, best bet
Slovenia has never gotten out of the group stages at the European Championship. However, draws against Denmark and Serbia have Zmajčeki eyeing history. Matjaž Kek’s side has lost just once in the last 12 months and it heads into matchday three unbeaten in its last eight matches.
England, on the other hand, has been one of the most disappointing teams in Germany this month. Gareth Southgate’s side struggled to hold onto a narrow 1-0 lead against Serbia and a dejected draw with Denmark only added to the frustration. The Three Lions need to play better or they won’t come close to bringing the Euro 2024 trophy home.
Let’s take a closer look at the odds and trends ahead of this highly anticipated UEFA European Championship clash:
Slovenia vs. England
Time/TV: Tuesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. CT (Fox)
Location: RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, Germany
Moneyline: Slovenia +950 | Draw +400 | England -310
Analysis: Stylistically, this is one of the most intriguing matchups in the entire tournament. England loves to dominate possession until it grabs the lead, and then, Southgate is happy for his team to sit back and try to defend said lead. Slovenia, meanwhile, is incredibly comfortable setting up in a compact 4-4-2 and playing without the ball.
This begs the question: if the Three Lions take an early lead, how will the rest of the game play out?
Southgate isn’t one to implement many changes within his squad. He’s stayed the course with his unique lineup decisions — notably playing Trent Alexander-Arnold out of position in midfield — throughout the first two matches. However, after a draw against Denmark, something has to give with England.
Luke Shaw isn’t fit enough to start yet, which means Kieran Trippier will retain his place as the left fullback. The most likely change to the starting XI is Conor Gallagher potentially taking Alexander-Arnold’s place in midfield. He’s a natural midfielder and his presence will allow Jude Bellingham and/or Declan Rice to get into more advanced positions.
The Three Lions’ attacking trio also needs to be better. Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka haven’t performed well outside for one reason or another, which has meant Harry Kane hasn’t had many opportunities. Is Southgate brave enough to make even more changes and bring in someone like Cole Palmer to help with chance creation? That remains to be seen.
These two sides have met six times in competitive matches. England holds the all-time advantage with five wins and a draw with one goal being scored overall in the last two meetings. Slovenia has never beaten the Three Lions and I expect that to remain true following the final whistle on Tuesday.
Similar to France, England has too much talent to be held down once again, despite disappointing performances to date. Harry Kane only needs one chance to get onto the scoresheet in the form he’s been in this season. He’ll score the opener before one of the Three Lions’ other attackers finishes Zmajčeki off.
Prediction: Slovenia 0-2 England
Best bet: Harry Kane anytime goalscorer (-105 at FanDuel Sportsbook)
