ULTIMATE GLORIOUS GOODWOOD BETTING GUIDE: Mail Sport’s experts, including Ed Chamberlin, name their best bets and outsiders to back across the five days

Glorious Goodwood is one of the highlights of the flat racing season, with outstanding action played out around one of the country’s most picturesque courses.

There are more than 35 races to get excited about between today and Saturday, with Group One action – the headline being Wednesday’s Sussex Stakes – and thrilling handicaps, most notably The Stewards Cup, setting punters with plenty of puzzles to solve.

To preview the festival, we have asked our lead columnist ED CHAMBERLIN, our top tipsters STEVE RYDER and CHRIS BAKER – who have been in outstanding tipping form – and our racing correspondent DOMINIC KING to give us their idea of three horses to follow.

WHAT IS YOUR NAP OF THE WEEK?

CHAMBERLIN: I’m keeping my powder dry until JAN BRUEGHEL (Thursday, 3pm) goes for the Gordon Stakes, which is a key trial for the St Leger. I hear that this colt – who has won both his races so far – is going to be Ballydoyle’s lead contender for the final Classic of the season at Doncaster. He’ll want to be winning this on the way.

BAKER: Well, my biggest fancy goes today. This represents a big step up in class for ENGLISH OAK (Tuesday, 3pm), but Ed Walker’s highly progressive colt has bolted up in his last two starts in handicaps. He readily pulled clear of 25 rivals in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and I fancy him to complete the hat-trick in The Lennox Stakes.

KING: You’ve beaten me to it, Chris. This is a huge week for Wathnan Racing and I think English Oak will oblige but, for variety, I’m going to put forward BIG EVS (Friday, 3.35pm) in the King George V Stakes. His connections were devastated when he lost at Royal Ascot but immediately cast their eyes at this race. If he breaks like he can, his rivals won’t see which way he goes. Compensation awaits.

RYDER: I can wait a little longer than Ed… PUROSANGE (Saturday, 3.35pm) is the one for me. After a close second in a Group Three at Sandown earlier this month, the Andrew Balding-trained colt runs here from 4lbs ‘well in’ at the weights on his handicap debut. He actually ran Big Evs close at the meeting last year, so he can further enhance the good record of three-year-olds in the race.

AND YOUR NEXT BEST…

CHAMBERLIN: You mentioned about this being a big week for Wathnan, Dom. I agree – they are going to have winners, I’m absolutely sure about that. I reckon AESTERIUS (Wednesday, 3pm) will do the business for them in the Molecomb Stakes. He was seriously impressive at Sandown last time and Archie Watson, his trainer, knows how to make fast horses run even quicker.

KING: I had the pleasure of spending a morning last week on Richard Hannon’s gallops. Here’s a stable that loves winning at Goodwood and Wednesday is going to be a champagne day for them. Rosallion will win the Sussex Stakes – he floated up the all-weather gallop and his coat was gleaming – but XANTHE, at around the 7/2 mark, ticks every box (Wednesday, 4.45pm)

BAKER: I’m going in again today! FAIR WIND (Tuesday, 4.10pm) won over this course and distance in May and scored in impressive style at Ascot last time out to record a fourth career success. His latest display gave the strong impression he’s open to further improvement and Pat Dobbs keeps the ride.

RYDER: I like your Big Evs confidence, Dom, but I think JASOUR will beat him (Friday, 3.35pm). An impressive winner at Ascot on his reappearance, he raced too keenly when 3rd in the Commonwealth Cup and 6th in the July Cup. This drop back to 5f for the first time since his maiden victory a year ago should suit and he can justify his connections decision to supplement him for this.

GIVE US A LONGSHOT…

KING: Can I remind everyone I tipped Goliath at 33s for the King George on Saturday?

CHAMBERLIN: Nobody likes a show off, Dominic!

KING: This is true! I also never had a penny on him. Anyway, I don’t know whether 10/1 counts as a longshot but I can’t believe the price of SPARKLING PLENTY (Thursday, 3.35pm) in the Nassau Stakes. She’s the filly that was sold for £8million at the Royal Ascot sale, which subsequently turned into £5.1million for a 50 per cent share of her, after she won the French Oaks. This race was immediately nominated as her target. Take the hint.

BAKER: I’m going to take you on, Dom. Despite having plenty to find on ratings, the exceptionally well-bred DOHA doesn’t look out of place in this line up given that her parents, Treve and Sea The Stars, won three Arcs between them. She won the Kensington Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and looked unlucky not to follow up in Listed company last time.

CHAMBERLIN: You underestimate Johnny Murtagh’s runners at your peril and I would simply say that TAKE HEART (Tuesday, 1.50pm) will give you a run for your money at around 14/1.

RYDER: I’m sticking with my Clive Cox theme. He won the Richmond Stakes (Thursday, 2.25pm) in 2019 and 2020 with Golden Horde and Supremacy who both broke their maidens at Windsor. APAREJO comes here following a debut success at the track when beating an odds-on favourite and he should outrun double figure odds. Here’s hoping for a successful week!
