West Virginia breaks state record, rakes in .68m of revenue in online gambling

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – In March of 2024, virtual casinos hit a record $20.68 million in revenue which is a state record when it comes to online gambling. For comparison, West Virginia online casinos started in 2020, and in the first two years, the virtual casinos didn’t even top $10 million. March’s upward trend even produced over $3 million in taxes for the month. A professor of economics at WVU who researches gambling trends highlights what this means for West Virginia.

“To the extent that there are winnings to the people that are gambling, they might spend that somewhere else in the West Virginia economy, buy a new car, buy a house, something like that,” Humphreys said. “It would definitely generate some economic activity.”

As far as Humphreys is concerned, online gambling in West Virginia will only continue to grow from here.
