This article is about treble betting. It explains what a treble bet is, how it works and gives football and horse racing treble bet examples.
In this article we are going to take a closer look at the treble bet, what it is, and how it works. So, what is a treble in betting?
What is a treble bet?
The concept of the treble bet is simple to understand. It is purely the combination of three single outright selections incorporated into one multiple bet – a treble.
How does a treble bet work?
As mentioned above, a treble bet consists of three selections which are then combined into one bet to make the treble. For the bet to win, each selection chosen must win. If one or two selections win, the treble bet will be settled as a loss and you will lose your stake.
Usually, a treble bet has the potential to return more than a single or a double bet as you are combining more odds to make up your bet. However, as there are more selections involved, there is often more risk than a single or double bet.

Now that we understand what a treble bet is, let us show you an example to see exactly what it looks like after signing up with the William Hill promo code. This example is a football treble bet.
Firstly, we need three selections to make up our treble. Remember, the three teams selected must win in 90 minutes for it to be a winning bet. Let’s select Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City who are all playing in the Champions League.
At the time of writing, Barcelona are priced at 6/5, Bayern Munich at 13/10, and Manchester City at 8/13. At the top of the graphic, you can see the combined odds for these selections, which make up the treble bet, are 7.17/1.
If we place £10 as our stake, the bet would return £81.74 (including our £10 stake) if all three selections win. If any of the selections lose, we would lose our full £10 stake. For a breakdown of each eventuality, please see the in-depth table below.
Selection | Result | Result | Result | Result | Result |
Barcelona @ 6/5 | Win | Win | Win | Lose | Lose |
Bayern Munich @ 13/10 | Win | Lose | Win | Win | Lose |
Manchester City @ 8/13 | Win | Win | Lose | Win | Lose |
Total returns (inc stake) | £81.74 | £0.00 | £0.00 | £0.00 | £0.00 |

And what is a treble bet with 4 teams?
Another slightly different treble bet is the treble with four teams. This bet requires four different selections but three selections have to win for a payout to be made. Let’s have a look at an example. If we take the three teams from above – Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Now let’s add Borussia Dortmund to beat Atletico Madrid as the fourth selection. Even if Dortmund is a losing selection, we can still receive a payout from the three other teams if they all win.
Let’s look at the pros and cons of a treble with four teams.
Pros of making a treble bet with four teams
- Higher chances of winning than a normal treble bet
- Less risky than placing a four-fold on the four selections as only three need to win
Cons of 4 team treble bets
- Lower odds than a straight treble bet
What is a treble bet in horse racing?
Horse racing is another incredibly popular sport that allows treble betting. We need three selections again for our treble bet and all three must win for a payout to be received. Let’s select three horses from three different events.
The horses selected are Savvy Warrior at 5/2, Kapal Layar at 2/1, and Sunfall at 2/1 – these odds were correct at the time of writing. The graphic shows our three selections and the combined odds that make up our treble bet is 30.50/1.
If we place £10 again as our stake, a successful bet would return £315, including our original £10 stake. For the bet to be settled as a win, all three horses must win their race. If any of the three selections lose, we would lose our original £10 stake. Please see the table below for an in-depth breakdown of the treble bet.
Selection | Result | Result | Result | Result | Result |
Savvy Warrior @ 5/2 | Win | Win | Win | Lose | Lose |
Kapal Layar @ 2/1 | Win | Lose | Win | Win | Lose |
Sunfall @ 2/1 | Win | Win | Lose | Win | Lose |
Total Returns (inc stake) | £315.00 | £0.00 | £0.00 | £0.00 | £0.00 |
What is a treble each way bet?
This bet is slightly different than a straight treble bet as it comprises of two separate bets – a win treble and a place treble. Due to the nature of this bet, the stake you place on an each-way treble will be doubled to cover the two bets. So, a £5 stake on an each-way treble would double to make a £10 total stake. However, the way an each-way treble bet is slightly different is that we don’t need every horse to win to receive a payout.
If any of the selections do not win but place, we will receive 1/5 odds on that selection and our returns will be adjusted accordingly. Most bookmakers payout on place finishes for any top two, three, or four finishes depending on how many runners are in the race.
For example, if we take the horses selected in the treble bet above our each-way treble bet would return £172.20 from a £10 stake if all the selections win. As mentioned above, you will still receive a payout even if only one selection places but this will be at reduced odds.
My tips for treble betting
When it comes to treble betting, there is one way in which you can put yourself in the best possible position to win and that is research. The best advice is to learn as much as you can about your selections.
If you want to place a football treble, make sure to research what team is in good form, defensive and attacking stats, and also pay attention to injuries and lineups. You might fancy a team who have a good price but could that be because their best player isn’t involved? Or does that team have a bad record at a particular ground or against a particular team? The more knowledge you can obtain when betting, the stronger position you’ll put yourself in.
The same goes for horse racing treble betting – pay attention to the form of the horses, the jockeys, the ground they are running on, and the weather conditions. There are so many variables that affect these bets and gaining knowledge about them will only help you.
Remember to always gamble responsibly and only bet what you can afford. Luck also plays a massive part in your bet. You could do as much research as possible and choose a selection, only for a player to get sent off early on, or the horse to fall at the first hurdle. These are things you can’t account for so remember to be safe when gambling and keep things fun!
