The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has issued fines to William Hill Sportsbook and Amelco, for violations involving bets placed on events that had already concluded and prohibited bets.
William Hill Fined $20,000 for Post-Event Bets
William Hill Sportsbook was fined $20,000 after it was revealed that the company had accepted over $25,000 in wagers on events that had already finished. The incidents occurred between 2022 and 2023 and involved completed college basketball games, hockey matches, and boxing events.
The company identified the source of the error as its content supplier, OpenBet, which is responsible for delivering event data to its platform. While the majority of bets placed in error were voided and customers had their wagers returned, six bets totaling over $5,000 were paid out before the issue was detected.
The company stated that it has implemented measures to prevent similar errors in the future.
Amelco Penalized for Unauthorized Bets
In a separate case, Amelco, a sports betting technology provider, was fined $10,000 for violations that occurred through its partnership with PlayUp, an online sportsbook operator. The violations included accepting bets on a U.S. presidential candidate and a New Jersey college basketball game. State regulations prohibited such wagers.
Amelco acknowledged the errors and worked with the DGE to address the regulatory breach.
Previous Violations
This is not the first time that sportsbooks have been reprimanded for similar breaches.
In 2021, Kambi Group and Rush Street Interactive were fined $1,000 each for accepting bets on a completed soccer match. More recently, in 2023, bet365 faced a $33,000 fine for allowing similar violations.
The latest fines mean that the total gambling industry fines for 2024 has reached $177.7 million.
